systems designed for higher pressures. It is non-flammable and of relatively low toxicity under normal conditions, but like all halogenated refrigerants, it must be handled carefully.

From an environmental and regulatory standpoint, R-22 is being phased out worldwide due to its ozone depletion potential and climate impact. In many jurisdictions, new production has been curtailed or banned, and systems using R-22 are being transitioned to newer, more ozone-friendly refrigerants. Honeywell promotes retrofit paths and alternative refrigerants (e.g. their Performax LT, Solstice lines) to replace R-22 in older systems.

R-22 has historically been one of the most widely used refrigerants, particularly in air conditioning, heat pump, and commercial / light industrial cooling systems. Some key application points:

• Common in residential & commercial air conditioning systems (split systems, window units)

• Used in refrigeration and HVAC equipment designed originally for HCFCs

• In many existing systems, R-22 remains in use (via reclaimed/stockpiled supply), but new production is restricted/being phased out in many jurisdiction

Because it operates at higher pressures (compared to some newer refrigerants), equipment must be designed for those pressures.
